Questions
The things people usually ask before a first lesson.
Getting started
Do I need my own piano?
You need access to a piano or keyboard to practise between lessons. A full size keyboard with weighted keys is ideal, though a smaller one is fine at the very beginning.
Can complete beginners take lessons?
Yes. I teach every level from a first lesson to advanced playing, and lessons are built around where you actually are.
How often should lessons be?
Weekly, for consistent progress. Other arrangements can be made where necessary.
How long does it take to learn?
It depends on your goals, your practice and your starting point. With regular practice, beginners usually notice real progress within a few months.
Can I choose the music I learn?
Yes. I will recommend repertoire that develops what you need, and I am always glad to include music you want to play.
Online lessons
Are online lessons as effective?
They can be. With a reliable connection, a good camera position and clear feedback, students make strong progress online. Many of mine do.
What do I need?
A piano or keyboard, a laptop, tablet or phone with a reliable connection, and a camera placed so I can see your hands and the keyboard. An external microphone or camera improves things further.
Which platform?
Zoom, usually.
Practical
What if I miss a lesson?
With at least forty eight hours notice we can reschedule. Lessons cancelled with less notice are charged in full.
Do you teach advanced and diploma students?
Yes. Advanced and diploma students usually begin with a consultation lesson, charged at the usual rate, where I hear you play and we set out what the work would involve.
